Amritsar (Punjab), September 20, 2026: The Sri Akal Takht Sahib has announced the expulsion of former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Amarjit Singh Chawla and Additional Head Granthi Giani Malkit Singh from the Sikh Panth, according to the decision announced after a meeting of the five Sikh high priests on Sunday.
The decision was taken following deliberations during the meeting held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Garhgajj announced the decision, citing alleged violations of Sikh religious discipline and Panthic norms.
According to the decision, Amarjit Singh Chawla has been expelled from the Sikh Panth following the passing of a Gurmata over alleged serious violations of Sikh conduct and Panthic rules. The Sikh community has also been directed not to maintain religious, social or political association with him.
Giani Malkit Singh, Additional Head Granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, was also expelled from the Panth over alleged actions contrary to Panthic discipline, according to the announcement.
The decision further bars both Chawla and Giani Malkit Singh from serving in any Sikh institution, gurdwara management committee or religious platform for life.
The development comes days after the SGPC suspended Giani Malkit Singh and a driver following allegations that surfaced in connection with a case involving Chawla. The SGPC had ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter.
Further details of the decision and the specific allegations cited by Sri Akal Takht Sahib are awaited.
