Vigilance nabs Lady SHO, Gunman in Rs 50,000 bribery case

Ferozepur, September 27, 2026: In a major crackdown under the Punjab Government's zero-tolerance policy against corruption, the Firozpur Range of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested two individuals, including a female police officer, for demanding and accepting a ₹50,000 bribe.
The arrested accused have been identified as Inspector Sunita Rani, Station House Officer (SHO) at Police Station Kot Ise Khan in Moga district, and Punjab Home Guard (PHG) Gurmeet Singh, who was also stationed at the same police station.
According to an official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau, the action was taken following a complaint lodged by Rajvinder Singh, a resident of village Nadhpur Hakim in Moga district. The case has been registered under Case No. 21 dated 26.09.2026 at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station, Firozpur Range.
The complainant, Rajvinder Singh, alleged that a criminal case (FIR No. 217 dated 22.09.2026) was previously registered against him at Police Station Kot Ise Khan. The PHG volunteer, Gurmeet Singh, allegedly threatened the complainant with harsh implications in the case and demanded a ₹1 lakh bribe to settle the matter in his favor. After negotiations, the deal was struck at ₹80,000.
The complainant further revealed that Gurmeet Singh had already taken a bribe of ₹20,000 on various dates. When the accused started demanding the remaining ₹60,000, Rajvinder Singh secretly recorded the conversation and handed over the audio evidence to Inspector Jagandeep Kaur at the Vigilance Bureau office in Firozpur.
Based on the verified complaint and evidence, a trap was laid by the Vigilance Bureau team in the presence of government witnesses. PHG Gurmeet Singh was caught red-handed while accepting ₹50,000 as the first installment of the remaining bribe amount.
During subsequent on-the-spot interrogation, the PHG volunteer confessed that he was collecting the money on the direct instructions and behalf of the SHO, Inspector Sunita Rani. Following his statement and direct evidence linking her to the crime, the Vigilance Bureau team swiftly arrested Inspector Sunita Rani as well.
The bribe amount of ₹50,000 was successfully recovered from the spot in the presence of official witnesses. The Vigilance Bureau spokesperson stated that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and further action will be initiated as per the legal framework.
