  Chandigarh, March 19 (BB): Reiterating his charges against the newly formed Akali-BJP government that its officers had started targeting and victimizing the Congress workers in the state, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh today said that he will soon be forwarding the details to the Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal as desired by him in a letter (written to Capt Amarinder) to see what action he really takes. Capt Amarinder also hailed the appointment of Mr Sunil Jhakhar as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party. He announced that he will be touring the entire state in the coming days to meet the party workers and the entire rank and file. “My hands are full as we have municipal elections, panchayat elections and then parliamentary elections”, he said, while spelling out his future course of action. Maintaining that the government had again stooped to its old tactics of victimising and harassing the Congress workers, he said, even the security cover of former minister Mr Gurchet Singh Bhullar, who contested elections from Khemkaran had been arbitrarily withdrawn as also that provided to his son and the Punjab Youth Congress vice president Sukhpal Bhullar despite High Court orders and an affidavit filed by the SSP that he was being provided security. Addressing a press conference at the PCC office here today, Capt Amarinder also warned against indiscipline of any kind in the party and said, he as well as the high command had taken serious and strong note of it. He said, the party in-charge for Punjab Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak has already issued a warning against indiscipline. Fielding a wide range of questions, he attributed the party’s loss in the recently held elections mainly to three factors; presence of rebels who spoiled the chances of the party candidates in at least 11 constituencies, the massive votes polled by the Bahujan Samaj Party in Doaba region as compared to 2007 elections and the ‘aata-daal scheme’, which despite being funded by the government of India was exploited by the Akalis to their own advantage. Capt Amarinder disagreed that due efforts were not made to prevail upon the party rebels to withdraw from the contest. He said, despite limited time available, of the 81 rebels who had filed nomination papers, 60 were made to withdraw and only 21 were left. Besides, he added, by the time Congress leadership could reach out to them they had already been paid huge money by the Shiromani Akali Dal to ensure that they stayed in the contest. He pointed out, a high powered committee headed by the Congress general secretary Mr BK Hariprasad pursued the matter. “Hence it is wrong to say that due efforts were not made to make the rebels withdraw”, he pointed out. Maintaining that the BSP had really done immense damage to the party in the Doaba region, he pointed out at several seats like Philaur, Kartarpur, Adampur and Phagwara the BSP vote share went up substantially as compared to 2007 elections and that damaged the Congress prospects in the region. He said, the Akali-BJP alliance took the advantage of the welfare schemes of the government of India. “Punjab added 7 lakh more below poverty line families to the already existing 13 lakh families and it was all funded by the government of India”, he pointed out. Asserting that the Congress vote share in the state was intact, he pointed out, rather it was the Akali-BJP alliance whose vote share has come down by 4 per cent while that of the Congress has come down by less than one percent. “Although the alliance won 12 seats more than the Congress, but their total vote share is only 0.8 (rpt 0.8) percent more than us”, he pointed out, while maintaining that the People’s Party of Punjab had taken away more votes from the Akalis than the Congress. The newly appointed CLP Leader Mr Sunil Jhakhar, former Chief Minister Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, PCC vice presidents Mr Lal Singh and Mr Rana Sodhi and general secretaries Mr Arvind Khanna and Rana Gurjit were also present at the press conference.
