Chitkara University Row: Meta removes controversial video in India

Chandigarh, September 26, 2026: Meta has reportedly removed a video linked to the Chitkara University controversy from its platforms in India, citing compliance with guidelines issued by the Government of India, according to information circulating in connection with the incident.
The video had reportedly spread rapidly on social media following protests at Chitkara University near Rajpura over unverified claims concerning female students at the girls’ hostel.
Students had gathered on the campus late Friday night after social media posts and videos circulated claims about two female students allegedly going missing or dying by suicide. The university and police have denied that any such deaths had taken place.
The protest later escalated, with reports of vandalism on the university campus and damage to a police vehicle. Police said they were investigating the claims and examining available evidence, including CCTV footage.
The video in question was widely circulated on social media and was also shared by several media organisations. It was subsequently reported to have become unavailable to users in India on Meta platforms.
The reported removal comes amid increased government scrutiny and regulatory requirements for social media platforms in India. Government guidelines require intermediaries to take action against unlawful content, including material that can mislead or deceive, promote violence, harm children or threaten public order.
However, the specific government direction, notice or legal order under which the Chitkara University video was removed has not been independently established in the available reports.
Authorities and the university have appealed to students and others not to rely on unverified social media claims as the circumstances surrounding the protests continue to be examined.
