Chandigarh, February 26: In one of the largest technological overhauls in the state’s educational history, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Thursday announced a massive ₹400 crore digitalisation project under the Punjab Sikhya Kranti initiative, aimed at equipping government schools with state-of-the-art infrastructure and redefining classroom teaching across the state.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann described the initiative as a historic milestone, stating that never before had digital infrastructure been introduced on such a large scale in Punjab’s government schools. He said the government had first strengthened physical infrastructure and improved learning outcomes, and is now ensuring that every child gains access to modern digital tools to prepare for the future.
Addressing a press conference at Punjab Bhawan, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains detailed that 38,649 brand-new desktop computers with the latest software are being deployed across 5,012 government schools. The distribution will cover all Senior Secondary and High Schools, along with 50 percent of Middle Schools. Additionally, dedicated computer labs will be established in 5,000 schools to ensure all Secondary and Senior Secondary institutions have fully functional facilities.
To promote interactive learning, 8,268 Interactive Flat Panels will be installed in 3,694 schools. Each Senior Secondary and High School will receive these panels, with larger schools allotted multiple units depending on student strength. The Minister stated that this shift marks a decisive transition from outdated systems and traditional chalkboards to technology-driven smart classrooms, permanently phasing out obsolete computer setups.
He emphasised that implementation has already commenced, with deliveries underway and all schools expected to receive equipment by March 20. School Heads have been directed to organise School-Level Unboxing Celebration Programmes between February 21 and March 20, inviting parents, School Management Committees, village panchayats, retired teachers and ex-servicemen to witness the digital transformation.
Responding to concerns regarding TET qualifications, the Education Minister assured teachers that their jobs are secure and that the government is exploring legal solutions while remaining in continuous dialogue with teacher unions. He reiterated that the Chief Minister-led government stands firmly with educators.
