Chandigarh, June 6, 2026: In a move aimed at modernising higher education and equipping students with industry-relevant skills, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Friday announced that Sardar Beant Singh State University will introduce five new professional and technology-focused programmes from the academic session 2026-27.
The new courses will include B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning, B.Tech in Robotics and AI, B.Pharmacy, B.Sc. Agriculture, along with integrated five-year programmes in MCA, MBA and M.Sc.
Describing the initiative as part of the Bhagwant Mann government’s effort to create future-ready universities, Bains said Punjab’s higher education system is being aligned with emerging industries and employment opportunities. He added that the focus is shifting from traditional exam-oriented learning to practical, skill-based education that prepares students for real-world careers.
“The era of rote learning is over. Our objective is to create graduates who are industry-ready from day one through internships, live projects and hands-on training,” the minister said. He added that students enrolled in the new programmes will undergo mandatory internships and project-based learning to enhance employability and innovation.
Bains said the initiative is also aimed at addressing the issue of brain drain by expanding access to quality technology, pharmaceutical and professional education within Punjab. “Parents should not feel compelled to send their children outside the state for advanced education in emerging fields. We are building institutions capable of meeting global standards right here in Punjab,” he said.
The minister noted that the introduction of cutting-edge courses such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics reflects the government’s commitment to preparing Punjab’s youth for the jobs and industries of the future while strengthening the state’s higher education ecosystem.
