MCC Strengthens 'Plastic Mukt Chandigarh' Drive with Stakeholder Collaboration
Chandigarh, June 12, 2025 – In a major push toward making Chandigarh a plastic-free city, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MCC) held a high-level stakeholder meeting today under the chairmanship of Commissioner Amit Kumar, IAS, to assess progress and chart the way forward for the ‘Plastic Mukt Chandigarh’ campaign.
The meeting follows the formal launch of the campaign on June 5, in observance of World Environment Day, aligning with the global theme #BeatPlasticPollution. As part of the campaign, a Cloth Bag ATM was recently inaugurated at Sector 26 Mandi to promote sustainable alternatives and encourage citizens to move away from single-use plastics.
Representatives from the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, NGOs, CRAWFED, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, Market Welfare Associations (MWAs), Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and environmental activists attended the meeting. Discussions focused on developing a coordinated approach to eliminating plastic use across the city.
Key focus areas included:
-
Strengthening enforcement by increasing penalties for the use and distribution of polythene bags
-
Phasing out single-use plastic materials through structured sector-wide plans
-
Promoting eco-friendly alternatives and ensuring easy public access
-
Clearly defining roles and responsibilities of stakeholders at the community level
-
Scaling up awareness campaigns and joint compliance monitoring
Commissioner Amit Kumar stressed the need for collective action and proactive public engagement to realize the campaign’s objectives. “Each stakeholder must act as a catalyst for change within their sphere of influence to foster a sustainable and plastic-free Chandigarh,” he said.
The Municipal Corporation reiterated its commitment to environmental responsibility and urged citizens to actively participate in the mission to establish Chandigarh as a model of urban sustainability.
