Railway Budget for Punjab sees 25-Fold Jump, major infrastructure push
Ferozepur, February 2, 2026: Punjab has witnessed a historic surge in railway investment, with the annual average budget allocation rising nearly 25 times over the years. While the state received an average of ₹225 crore annually during 2009–14, the allocation for 2026–27 stands at ₹5,673 crore, reflecting a massive push towards rail infrastructure modernisation. This information was shared by Ashwini Vaishnav, Union Minister for Railways, through a video message.
According to official data, railway projects worth ₹26,382 crore are currently in progress across Punjab. These investments cover new track construction, station redevelopment and extensive safety upgrades, aimed at transforming rail travel across the state.
Under the Amrit Station Scheme, as many as 30 railway stations in Punjab have been identified for complete redevelopment to enhance passenger amenities and overall travel experience. A total investment of ₹1,311 crore has been earmarked for station modernisation. Redevelopment work has already been completed at three stations — Muktsar, SAS Nagar (Mohali) and Anandpur Sahib.
Connectivity in Punjab has also improved with the expansion of premium train services. At present, six pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains and one pair of Amrit Bharat Express services are operational in the state, significantly reducing travel time and improving passenger comfort.
The railway network in Punjab has expanded rapidly since 2014. Approximately 400 km of new railway tracks have been constructed during this period — a length stated to be more than the entire rail network of the Philippines. Punjab has also achieved 100 per cent railway electrification, with 1,715 km of rail lines electrified since 2014.
In addition, 414 flyovers and underpasses have been constructed to improve safety and ease congestion at railway crossings.
The unprecedented rise in budget allocation and accelerated project execution mark a significant shift in railway development in Punjab, promising better connectivity, safer travel and modern infrastructure for passengers across the state.
