PAU-KVK holds 'Training Camp on Millets and Value-Added Products' for rural women
Ferozepur, May 22, 2026: To create awareness among rural women about the importance of millets, their processing, and value-added products, the Punjab Agricultural University-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ferozepur organised a training camp at village Kabbar Vachha.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Gurmel Singh Sandhu, Deputy Director of KVK, said that millets, which were widely consumed by our ancestors, are once again gaining popularity due to their immense health benefits. He explained that ragi, jowar, kutki, and other millets help keep the body cool and energetic during the summer season. He added that the nutrients present in these grains also strengthen the body’s immunity system. Dr. Sandhu also emphasised the importance of traditional food habits and old food preservation techniques.
Dr. Divya Jain, Assistant Professor (Home Science), provided practical training on preparing various nutritious dishes from millets. She demonstrated the preparation of ragi laddoos, jowar cheela, bajra kheer, kutki upma, and other healthy recipes. She informed the participants that incorporating millets into daily diets can make household food more nutritious and healthy.
She further said that KVK Ferozepur regularly conducts various training programmes for rural women to promote self-reliance and enhance family income. She also encouraged women to form Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and start small-scale home enterprises.
During the camp, Dr. B.S. Sekhon delivered information on proper nutrient management in kharif crops, fruits, and vegetables. The participating women showed keen interest in the information shared about millets and their health benefits.
