New Delhi, May 22, 2026: The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave to severe heatwave warning for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, predicting intense weather conditions across the region over the next several days.
According to the IMD forecast, heatwave conditions are likely to continue in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from May 22 to May 28, while severe heatwave conditions may grip several areas between May 24 and May 27.
The warning comes as temperatures continue to rise sharply across north India, increasing concerns over public health, water demand, and power consumption. Daytime temperatures in several districts are expected to remain significantly above normal during the period.
The weather department has advised residents to avoid direct sun exposure during afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses, especially children, elderly people, and outdoor workers.
The IMD also warned that heatwave conditions are expected to persist across other parts of northwest and central India, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, over the coming week.
