Punjabis poll results- people protest with vengeance
Punjabis have not just registered a protest vote, they have done it with an extremely strong message to the leaders of old, traditional parties, if the defeat margins of the party leaders are any indication!! SAD president Sukhbir Badal lost with a huge margin of 30,000 votes to AAP's Jagdeep Kamboj. Capt Amarinder lost with a margin of nearly 20,000 votes to AAP's Ajitpal Singh Kohli. Bathinda urban had still ruder message for Manpreet Badal of Congress, who was defeated with an unkind margin of almost 60,000 votes by AAP's Jagroop Singh Gill. Though defeated , SAD supremo, Prakash Singh Badal was spared the humiliation of huge- margin, loss, perhaps, in deference to his age and to his long standing political career. The winner, AAP's Gurmeet Singh Khudian had a victory margin of nearly 13,000 votes - Small consolation for a five-time CM, who probably was contesting his last election this time, at the age of 94. Badal Sr never lost an election other than one early in his political career. Congress' CM face, Charanjit Singh Channi , despite making last ditch efforts with the entire state machinery at his disposal, suffered a mortifying loss from Bhadaur when AAP's Labh Sinh Ugoke defeated him with a margin of nearly 37,000 votes. Chamkaur Sahib, his other constituency proved to be more ' kind', by keeping the defeat margin at 8000 votes, but putting the victory squarely in AAP's Dr Charanjit Singh's lap.

The message was strongest against the 'giants', the contestants in the Big-fight arena of Amritsar East, cong's Navjot Sidhu and SAD's Bikram Majithia, both of whom engaged in no holds barred contest, making scathing verbal attacks using all kinds of language, perhaps under the impression that this would compensate for lack of agenda, ideology , and cover up flaws. Out of nowhere, emerged this unknown lady, AAP's Jeevan Jot Kaur, who quietly walked through narrow lanes of Amritsar, talking and convincing the voters, and stole the thunder right under the noses of two giants!! The defeat margins were ' kinder ' to Sidhu ( 6713) than to Majithia (14408). Majithia can find consolation in his wife Geneive's victory from his old constituency of Majitha.
What is really interesting is that no tried and tested methods seemed to work this time! No dera factor, no old loyalties, no cadre strength, no amount of inducements or carrots- dangling!
Infact, as a TV channel head revealed to me that people confessed to journalists that they accepted whatever inducements or directions came their way, " but we went straight to our gurdwara and sought forgiveness from waheguru for making false promises and assurances to the leaders by swearing on our children's heads. On the voting day, we voted for change", they told the journos!
what has aggravated the injury and insult for these giants is that they were defeated by political greenhorns, ...many of them, ordinary, middle class people who were probably contesting polls for the very first time!
It's time to read the writing on the wall for these parties, as also for AAP. People want their leaders to perform...or perish , inglorious!
