Tarn Taran: Untimely release of canal water destroys 10 acres of wheat crop
Baljit Singh
Patti (Tarn Taran), March 31, 2025: In a major setback for farmers in Sabhra village, Tarn Taran district, around 8-10 acres of ripe wheat crops were destroyed due to the untimely release of canal water.
According to Sahib Singh Sabhra, State Finance Secretary of the Kisan Sangharsh Committee Punjab (Kot Budha), the irrigation department released water into the Khara Raj Baha canal ahead of schedule, causing severe damage to the fields.
Farmer Jagraj Singh, who had leased seven acres for cultivation, along with four other farmers, suffered heavy losses as water flooded their fields. Despite repeated warnings to the irrigation department about the potential overflow and waterlogging, no action was taken. Farmers now bear the brunt of this negligence.
Issuing a strong warning to the authorities, farmer leaders have demanded an immediate stop to the water flow. They have also threatened to stage protests, including burning effigies of department officials, if their grievances are not addressed soon.
