Punjab & Haryana High Court adopts fuel-saving measures amid fuel crisis concerns

Chandigarh, May 22, 2026: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a circular introducing several austerity and fuel-conservation measures, including virtual hearings, work-from-home arrangements for staff, and encouragement of carpooling among judges and employees.
According to the circular dated May 21, 2026, the directions were issued following advisories from the Government of India’s Department of Personnel and Training and the Supreme Court of India. The measures have been implemented with immediate effect under the orders of the Chief Justice.
- Judges of the High Court have been encouraged to adopt carpooling arrangements for optimum fuel utilization.
- Most court hearings will now be conducted through video conferencing using approved software platforms to reduce travel and fuel consumption. The Registry has been directed to ensure timely sharing of video-conferencing links and uninterrupted technical support for lawyers and courts.
- Up to 33% of staff in each branch or section may be allowed to work from home wherever feasible. Registrars concerned will prepare weekly rosters while ensuring uninterrupted court functioning.
- Staff members working from office have also been encouraged to use public transport, carpooling, bicycles, and electric vehicles.
The circular further states that employees permitted to work from home must remain available telephonically and be ready to attend office whenever required.
Officials clarified that concerned Registrars can restrict or modify work-from-home arrangements if they feel such a system affects essential functioning in any branch or section.
