Sangrur, November 4, 2021:
21 years after the murder of Canadian citizen Jaswinder Kaur alias Jassi, the cross-examination of Sukhwinder Singh alias Mithu concluded in a Sangrur’s session court on Wednesday. The cross-examination of Mithu was concluded by the defense counsel in two hearings of the case. On October 29 in the court Smriti Dhir, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mithu appeared for the same but the examination was not completed in that hearing following which he again appeared in the court on Wednesday. During both these hearings, Mithu faced Jassi’s mother Malkeet Kaur and Uncle Surjit Singh (both accused of killing Jassi) after almost 21 years.
Mithu was brought in the court by the police from Ludhiana jail, where he has been lodged in an NDPS case. Surjit Singh was brought from the Kapurthala jail, where he he has been lodged in case of Jassi’s murder and Malkeet Kaur also appeared in the court, who is presently out on bail.
Ashwani Choudhary, advocate from the prosecution side, said, “As the cross-examination has been completed, now Mithu will not appear in the court until the court orders. He gave honest replies to all the questions in his examination. More than two decades have been passed since the murder of Jassi but I think we are very close to the justice for Jassi.”
“Mithu also appealed in the court for seeking security to him and his family. He said that he was facing life threats from Surjit Singh and Malkeet Kaur,” added Choudhary.
Mithu was questioned by a three-member team of Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyers’ - Simrandeep Singh Sandhu, PS Brar and Arshdeep Bhardwaz. Talking to Babushahi, Simrandeep Sandhu said, “We have completed the cross-examination of Mithu, who is the main witness in this case. He has given answers to many questions but he was unable to answer a few questions as he said he did not remember those facts now.” Sandhu added that they had already filed the bail plea of Surjit Singh in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the court will announce its verdict on that soon.
It is to be noted that Canadian citizen Jaswinder Kaur Jassi was murdered by hired killers on June 8, 2000 near Narike village in Jagraon, when she was going on a scooter with her husband, Mithu.
Mithu, a kabaddi player of village Kaunke Khosa near Jagraon, and Jassi married each other in 2000 after falling in love with each other. They married each other secretly against the wishes of Jassi’s family. But a few months after their marriage, Malkeet Kaur (Jassi’s mother) and Surjit Singh Badesha (Jassi’s maama) allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kill them, following which they hired 12 killers for the same. The killers attacked the couple with a sword and hockey sticks when they were going to market on a scooter on the evening of June 8, 2000. Jassi was killed by the killers while Mithu survived with serious injuries.
The case also took place in a court of Canada and in 2019, Surjit Singh and Malkeet Kaur were extradited to India by the Canada government.
