Chandigarh, May 14, 2025 – In a proactive step toward promoting student health, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive to all affiliated schools to establish ‘Sugar Boards’ on their premises.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption among children, a growing concern that has been linked to an alarming increase in Type 2 diabetes in school-age children.
According to the circular (No. Acad-26/2025), the move comes in response to studies showing that children aged 4 to 18 are consuming sugar well beyond recommended levels.
Children aged 4–10 consume around 13% of their daily calories from sugar, and those aged 11–18 consume 15%, far exceeding the advised limit of 5%.
These Sugar Boards will display vital information such as the recommended daily sugar intake, sugar content in common processed foods (like junk food and cold drinks), and healthier dietary alternatives.
Schools have also been instructed to organize seminars and workshops to spread awareness among students. Schools must submit a brief report along with photographs of their implemented activities in PDF format by July 15, 2025, via the provided online portal.
The circular, signed by Dr. Praggya M Singh, Director (Academics), urges all schools to act promptly to create a healthier learning environment and ensure the well-being of students.
