Kapurthala (Punjab), July 11, 2025: Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh has called for the creation of a dedicated educational regulatory authority in Punjab to monitor and regulate the functioning of private universities across the state.
Speaking during the ongoing session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, the senior legislator raised the demand while discussing the proposal to grant university status to Rayat Bahra Professional University and CGC Jhanjeri University, which was approved by the House. With this move, the total number of private universities in Punjab has now reached 26.
“I welcome the establishment of these two new universities. I am confident that they will raise the standard of higher education and offer world-class learning opportunities to students from Punjab, other Indian states, and abroad,” said Rana Gurjeet Singh.
However, he emphasized the urgent need for a strong regulatory framework to ensure transparency, accountability, and quality control in privately managed institutions.
“With the growing number of private universities, there must be an educational regulatory authority to oversee their operations, maintain academic standards, and safeguard student interests,” he added.
