Punjab eases restrictions on state employees amid easing tensions
By Mehak Arora
Chandigarh, May 17, 2025: In n light of the easing tensions between India and Pakistan, the Punjab government has announced the lifting of restrictions on leave for state government employees.
An official notification has been issued to all departments, allowing employees to now apply for and avail their leaves as per normal procedures.
Background: What Led to the Ban?
The leave restrictions were initially imposed following the Pulwama terror attack, which escalated tensions between the two nations.
In response to the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor, a major counter-terror mission targeting militant infrastructures in Pakistan. The operation reportedly resulted in the elimination of over 100 militants.
In retaliation, Pakistan carried out drone strikes near the Indian border, and several missile recoveries raised alarm, prompting heightened security and readiness across Indian states, including Punjab.
Why Was Leave Suspended?
Given the volatile situation, the Punjab government—along with several other states—temporarily suspended employee leaves to ensure uninterrupted government functioning and preparedness for any emergency.
What Has Changed Now?
With a ceasefire and partial diplomatic agreement now in place between the two countries, the situation is gradually returning to normal. As a result, the Punjab government has decided to revoke the leave ban, offering relief to thousands of employees who had been waiting to use their earned leave.
