Mohali (Punjab), May 28, 2025: Senior Akali leader and Padma Bhushan awardee Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa passed away today at the age of 89 at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, following a prolonged battle with a lung ailment.
His demise marks the end of a remarkable political journey spanning over six decades — one that left an indelible imprint on both Punjab and national politics.
From Sangrur to National Spotlight
Born on April 9, 1936, in Ubhawal village of Punjab's Sangrur district, Dhindsa's tryst with leadership began early.
As a student at Government Ranbir College, Sangrur, he served as the first Secretary and later the President of the Students’ Council — a prelude to a life committed to public service.
A Storied Political Career
Dhindsa began his formal political career as a Member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly, winning from constituencies like Dhanaula, Sunam, and Sangrur. He rose to become Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Punjab Government, overseeing key departments like Transport, Sports, Tourism, and Cultural Affairs.
His influence extended beyond Punjab as he went on to serve multiple terms in both the Lok Sabha (2004–2009) and the Rajya Sabha (1998–2004, 2010–2022).
Notably, he held cabinet positions under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, including Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers and Minister for Sports — playing a crucial role in national policymaking during a transformative phase in Indian politics.
Party Building and Leadership
In 2020, amid internal rifts in the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Dhindsa took a bold step by founding the Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic), which later merged with SAD (Taksali) to form Shiromani Akali Dal (Sanyukt) in 2021.
He led the new outfit with conviction until it was reabsorbed into the SAD in 2024, reaffirming his lifelong commitment to Sikh and Punjabi political identity.
Principled Politics and Personal Life
Dhindsa was widely respected for his integrity. Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2019, he returned it in 2020 in solidarity with the farmers' protests, earning admiration for standing by his principles over accolades.
He is survived by his wife, Harjit Kaur, and three children, including Parminder Singh Dhindsa, a former Finance Minister of Punjab.
