African swine fever detected in this Punjab district, high alert issued
Babushahi Bureau
Nawanshahr, September 25, 2025: The district administration has sounded a high alert after African swine fever was confirmed in pigs in Bhaura village, with District Magistrate Ankurjeet Singh declaring the village the disease epicentre and imposing containment measures in surrounding areas. The orders, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, designate a 1‑km radius as the infected zone and a 10‑km radius as the surveillance zone, effective through November 23, 2025.
African swine fever is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs; while it can devastate pig populations and related livelihoods, it does not transmit to humans and poses no risk to human health.
Key restrictions to curb spread (till November 23, 2025):
-
Complete ban on movement of live/dead pigs, pork, feed, or related products into or out of the district and affected zones.
-
No person or vehicle may enter or exit the surveillance zone (10 km radius) without authorization; access to the infected zone (1 km radius) is restricted.
-
Prohibition on moving pig‑related equipment or machinery out of the affected area.
-
Total ban on sale or transport of any live or dead pig or pork in markets within the notified zones.
The administration has appealed to pig farmers and the public to strictly comply with these orders to prevent further spread of the disease.
