Chandigarh, July 4, 2026: Two people are still feared trapped after an old building collapsed on Saturday in Industrial Area, Phase II of Chandigarh, while four others were rescued safely in a swift operation by emergency teams.
The incident occurred at Plot No. 28/9, where scrap-related work was reportedly being carried out. The building's roof and lintel suddenly gave way, causing the structure to collapse.
Following the incident, the Chandigarh Police, local administration and disaster management teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. JCB machines and two heavy cranes have been deployed to remove the debris and search for those trapped.
According to M.P. Chawla, a total of six people were inside the building at the time of the collapse. Four of them were rescued safely, while the building owner and one of his workers remain trapped beneath the debris.
Chawla said the building was quite old and the roof collapsed due to structural weakness.
He added that rescue teams are working on a war footing to reach the two trapped persons, who are believed to be buried under the debris of the building's first floor.
Police have cordoned off the area, while rescue and disaster management personnel continue efforts to safely extricate those trapped. The exact cause of the collapse will be determined after the rescue operation is completed.
