Vet Varsity gets Rs. 45 lakhs Grant for Artificial Insemination of Canine
To develop first of its kind canine semen bank in the country

Ludhiana (Punjab), March 27, 2025: Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has been awarded a grant worth Rs. 45 lakhs by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, Ludhiana under Experiential Learning Project (ELP) for strengthening of Canine Semen Cryopreservation and endoscopic Artificial Insemination Unit".
The grant is vested to the Department of Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics which is also the Centre for Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT) recognised by ICAR in the field of Animal Reproduction.
Dr. Mrigank Honparkhe, Principal Scientist cum HoD and leader of the group for development of this unit informed that there is a lot of demand among pet owners and breeders for endoscopic artificial insemination (AI) in dogs. The department has already standardized the procedures of canine semen cryopreservation and AI.
This grant will enable to develop a state of the art and first of its kind canine semen bank in the country where semen of common and rare breeds can be preserved for future breeding purposes.
Dr. Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity congratulated the entire team and stressed upon the development of more such new facilities for the benefit of livestock and pet owners and to improve the understanding and knowledge of the students.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Uppal, Dean Post Graduate Studies and Nodal Officer of this project congratulated the team for this prestigious grant which will benefit the veterinary students and canine practitioners to learn the techniques of Semen Cryopreservation and AI in dogs.
