Beant Singh Assassination: ‘We stopped 8–9 attempts, failed once,’ Says Ex-IGP R.S. Khatra

Chandigarh, February 7, 2026: Making a major disclosure on the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, retired IGP R.S. Khatra has said that Punjab Police had successfully foiled at least eight to nine attempts on Singh’s life before the fatal attack in 1995.
In an interview with Babushahi Network, Khatra explained that in high-profile cases involving terrorists, gangsters or organised crime, perpetrators often remain “one step ahead”, forcing the police to rely on constant intelligence assessment and pre-emptive action.
“In most cases, police succeed in taking preventive steps that save lives. But sometimes, when even one attempt slips through, tragedy occurs,” Khatra said.
Referring specifically to the Beant Singh assassination, Khatra said security agencies had repeatedly neutralised threats aimed at the former chief minister, but the attackers succeeded only once — with devastating consequences.
“We stopped several assassination attempts. They succeeded only one time, and that led to the tragedy,” he stated.
Recalling one such incident, Khatra said there was a credible threat of firing when Beant Singh was scheduled to pass through Kharar, following which precautionary measures were taken to avert a possible attack.
Beant Singh was assassinated in August 1995 in a bomb blast near the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh, an incident that marked a turning point in Punjab’s political and security history.
