Sri Akal Takht Sahib summons Barnala man over alleged disrespect to Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Amritsar (Punjab), February 7, 2026: The Secretariat of Sri Akal Takht Sahib has summoned Gurjant Singh of Barnala to appear before the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority over remarks allegedly made against the reverence and respect of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji during a Gurmat programme attended in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
According to a statement issued under the directions of Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj, Gurjant Singh is required to appear in person at the Akal Takht Sahib Secretariat on February 9, 2026, at 10:00 am to submit a written clarification regarding his alleged comments.
The statement emphasised that no individual has the right to make statements that undermine the dignity and respect of the Sikh Gurus, and such conduct is “unacceptable and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances by Sri Akal Takht Sahib or the entire Khalsa Panth.”
Sri Akal Takht Sahib — the oldest of the Five Takhts and the supreme temporal authority in Sikhism — has historically taken strict action whenever respect for the Guru Granth Sahib or the Sikh Gurus is perceived to be compromised. In recent years, the Takht’s jathedar has reiterated that any lapse in the dignity or reverence of the Sikh scriptures and gurus warrants suo motu attention and appropriate action.
The forthcoming appearance by Gurjant Singh before the Akal Takht Sahib aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, following the institution’s firm stance on protecting the sanctity and honour of Sikh religious traditions.
