Chandigarh, February 7, 2026: Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Sh. Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, on Saturday said that Haryana is playing a leading role in the country’s dairy sector, producing nearly 36 percent of India’s total milk output, amounting to about 125.42 million tonnes.
The Union Minister was addressing the gathering as Chief Guest on the second day of the 41st State-Level Livestock Fair and Exhibition held in Kurukshetra.
He said that the Haryana breed of cow has earned global recognition and urged the state government to establish cooperative societies in every village to benefit livestock farmers. Emphasising the importance of cooperatives, he said they could significantly enhance milk exports and strengthen farmers’ incomes.
Ranjan Singh noted that livestock farmers from across the state have brought high-quality animals to the exhibition being held on the holy land of Kurukshetra, reflecting their deep bond with animal husbandry.
He said that the livestock sector supports the livelihood of nearly 10 crore people across the country and has also emerged as a strong instrument of women empowerment.
Highlighting the growth of the sector, the Union Minister said that in 2014, India’s milk production stood at 146.3 million tonnes.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, special focus was given to livestock farmers, and Animal Husbandry was separated from the Agriculture Department to function as an independent ministry.
As a result, India’s milk production has now reached 248 million tonnes, making the country the largest milk producer in the world. He added that livestock farmers will play a crucial role in achieving the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The Union Minister informed that the Animal Husbandry Department is installing genomic chips in selected animals to improve breeds. These chips help monitor diseases and other health parameters, supporting scientific research. He said the Central Government is implementing the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), under which FMD vaccines are being administered free of cost to animals in Haryana. At present, around 70 mobile veterinary clinics are operational in the state.
