Chandigarh, January 26, 2018: The most wanted gangster of Punjab Vicky Gounder was killed in an encounter with a team of Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU) of Punjab police at a dhani (hamlet) in Rajasthan, about 50 meters from the state's border with Punjab on Friday.
Talking with babushahi.com, DGP Punjab Suresh Arora confirmed killing of Vicky Gounder in an encounter with Punjab police.
The mastermind of sensational Nabha jailbreak, which took place in 2016, was on the run for long.
Gounder's close associate Prema Lahoria was also killed during the encounter. The third gangster identified as Sukhpreet Singh Budha succumbed to the bullet injuries in hospital at Abohar where bodies of Gounder and Lahoria were brought.
DGP Intelligence Dinker Gupta said that one more gangster injured associate of the slain gangster was yet to be identified. The dhani where the encounter took place belongs to gangster Lakhwinder Singh Lakha who has been arrested.
Two police officials have also been injured during the encounter and three weapons recovered, added Gupta.
Gounder was evading arrest since November 2016 when he made a sensational escape from the maximum-security Nabha Central Jail in Punjab along with five other prisoners, including two terrorists.
While the Punjab Police rearrested five escapees in a few months, Gounder remained on the run.
Vicky Gounder's real name was Harjinder Bhullar alias Jinder, a resident of Sarawan Bodla village in former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's home turf Lambi.
Gounder was suspected to be behind a fatal attack on another notorious gangster Sukha Kahlwan near Phagwara town, 135 km from here, in January 2015.
Kahlwan was in police custody and on his way for a court hearing when gangsters attacked him.
Gounder and other gangsters were running their gangs and issuing threats and extorting money from people while lodged in Punjab jails.
Who was Vicky Goundar?
Harjinder Singh Bhullar alias Vicky Gounder, a resident of Village Saravan Bodla in Sri Muktsar District, belongs to the gang formed by another history-sheeter Jaipal Singh. Gounder shot to limelight in January 2015 when his name cropped up as the prime suspect in the gangster Sukha Kahlwan’s murder. Gounder and his accomplices had filmed the act and danced around the Kahlwan’s body in front of the policemen.
Kahlwan was killed in Phagwara when six cops were taking him back to the Nabha jail in a jeep after a court hearing in Jalandhar. Gounder is wanted in at least 15 cases of murder, kidnappings and robbery in north India.
