Ludhiana gears up for safer roads: MP Sanjeev Arora unveils Black-Spot Improvement Plan

Ludhiana (Punjab), May 19, 2025 – In a major push toward road safety, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, along with Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, ADCP Gurpreet Kaur Purewal, Municipal Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, and other key officials, held a joint press conference at Circuit House on Monday to tackle Ludhiana’s growing traffic concerns.
The highlight of the event was the launch of a comprehensive report titled “Road Accident Black-Spot Improvement Plan for Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Roads,” published by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre, SAS Nagar.
12 High-Risk Black Spots Identified
Rahul Verma, Member of the Punjab Road Safety Council, presented critical findings from the report, which identified 12 accident-prone black spots in Ludhiana:
- UPSC Jain Charitable Hospital
- Bobby Palace to Shingar Cinema
- Sethi Ice-Cream T-Point (Metro Road)
- Punjab National Bank
- Itta Wala Chowk
- Vishwakarma Chowk
- Durga Mata Mandir
- Jagraon Bridge
- Jai Mata Chintpurni Dhaba to Bharat Petrol Pump
- SBI to Pavilion Mall stretch
- Police Line, Deep Nagar
- Sabji Mandi Chowk
These zones were flagged based on accident data and will now be the focus of targeted safety interventions.
Navdeep Asija, Advisor to the Punjab Government, also provided a detailed presentation outlining technical solutions for improving traffic flow and reducing risks.
Positive Trend in Road Safety
Officials noted encouraging progress: road accident fatalities in Ludhiana declined from 403 deaths in 2023 to 377 in 2024—a result of joint efforts by the police and civil administration.MP Arora acknowledged the contributions of Commissioner Sharma and ADCP Purewal in managing traffic more efficiently.
“While several initiatives have shown results, we are committed to doing more. Accident-prone areas are being systematically addressed to prevent further loss of life,” Arora said.
New Measures Announced
- 140 additional traffic police personnel have been deployed, especially around schools and colleges during peak hours.
- A foot overbridge near General Bus Stand will soon be constructed to ease congestion.
- The two-way traffic trial on the elevated road from Hero Bakery Chowk to Pakhowal Road has proven successful and will now be made permanent.
MP Arora concluded by urging the public to follow traffic rules and support the administration’s road safety initiatives. “Together, we can make Ludhiana’s roads safer for everyone,” he said.
