Chandigarh, May 31, 2025 – Haryana’s Energy, Transport, and Labour Minister Anil Vij has called for a serious rethink on how the younger generation interacts with technology, especially mobile phones and television.
Speaking at a student felicitation event in Ambala, the minister emphasized the urgent need to reduce screen time for a healthier and more alert society.
Addressing the “Bhavishya Jyoti Samaroh” held to honour academically meritorious students of Ambala district, Vij expressed concern over the growing dependence on screens among youth.“Mobile phones have created awareness, but they’ve also caused deep harm to physical health, social interaction, and mental focus,” he said.
₹12.5 Lakh from Minister’s Discretionary Fund
During the ceremony, Vij awarded ₹10,000 each to 125 top-performing students, contributing a total of ₹12.5 lakh from his discretionary fund.
He encouraged students to not only pursue academic excellence but also focus on character development and mindful living.
Mobile Use: A Double-Edged Sword
Vij acknowledged the benefits of mobile technology but warned that excessive use is leading to physical ailments and emotional disconnection. “Today, people spend more time watching screens than interacting with one another. The mobile phone should be a tool—not a trap,” he said.
He emphasized the need to use technology responsibly and urged parents and educators to guide children towards balanced screen habits.
He also reflected on earlier times, when people learned through books, real-life experiences, and human interaction, noting that modern technology cannot replace the depth of traditional learning.
Building Character and Confidence
Highlighting the importance of character, values, and confidence, the minister said that success is a combination of ability and opportunity.
He encouraged students to find their unique talents and embrace competition as a way to build self-esteem and personal growth.
“Not everyone may sing or speak on a stage, but each person has a special quality that sets them apart,” he told students. He urged youth to contribute positively to society and stay connected to their cultural roots while embracing modern tools.
Technology with Caution
“We must embrace technology but also stay protected from its adverse effects,” Vij warned, urging families to set boundaries around digital consumption.
He reiterated that the goal of education is not just academic knowledge but also building individuals who can guide, uplift, and lead with wisdom.
The event was attended by local dignitaries, school officials, hundreds of students, and their families, who welcomed the minister’s strong message on youth development, education, and digital well-being.
