British High Commissioner summoned, FS terms debate on farmers protest 'Gross Interference'
New Delhi, March 9, 2021: Taking a serious note of British MPs holding a debate on the ongoing farmers protest in the House of Commons on Monday, foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla summoned British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis and conveyed strong opposition.
“The unwarranted and tendentious discussion on agricultural reforms in India in the British Parliament has been strongly opposed by the Indian government,” stated a press statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs.
“The Foreign Secretary made clear that this represented a gross interference in politics of another democratic country,” the MEA reported.
He also advised that British MPs should refrain from practicing vote bank politics by misrepresenting events, especially in relation to another fellow democracy.
