Chandigarh, May 28, 2025: As new COVID-19 variants emerge, PGIMER is ramping up its preparedness to manage any potential surge in cases. Prof. Sanjay Jain, Dean (Research) and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, emphasized the importance of readiness without panic.
“Be prepared, but don’t panic. Most cases of the new variants are mild, yet vigilance is crucial, especially to protect the vulnerable,” said Prof. Jain.
To ensure prompt and effective treatment, PGIMER has reactivated special COVID-19 wards, including ICU beds and high-dependency units. The hospital has thoroughly checked oxygen supplies, ventilators, and other critical equipment to be ready for an increase in serious cases.
All departments at PGIMER are strictly following the latest COVID-19 treatment protocols as recommended by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Ministry of Health.
PGIMER is also supporting national efforts by studying virus samples and reporting changes in variants to aid ongoing surveillance.
Prof. Jain urged the public to follow safety measures:
- Wear masks in hospitals, public transport, and crowded places.
- Report symptoms like fever, cough, breathing difficulty, runny nose, or diarrhea early to a healthcare provider.
- Avoid self-medicating with antibiotics or steroids without medical advice.
- Ensure extra caution for elderly, immunocompromised, and those with underlying conditions by avoiding crowds and practicing good hand hygiene.
“PGIMER remains committed to protecting public health with timely action, scientific guidance, and community support. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and respond as needed,” Prof. Jain concluded.
