Health dept engages nursing students in chart-making drive on World Thalassemia Day
Ferozepur, May 26, 2025: To mark World Thalassemia Day, the Health Department Ferozepur organized a chart-making competition under the leadership of Civil Surgeon Dr. Rajwinder Kaur at the Civil Hospital. The event saw active participation from students of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Nursing, Sodhewala.
The winners of the competition were awarded by Senior Medical Officer Dr. Nikhil Gupta, Nodal Officer Dr. Harpreet, Dr. Isha Narula, and Dr. Shaeena.
District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma and Deputy MMO Ankush Bhandari emphasized that Thalassemia (a genetic blood disorder where the body fails to produce enough blood) can only be prevented through awareness. Due to lack of knowledge, many newborns unknowingly fall victim to this life-threatening disease. Therefore, increasing public awareness is crucial to protect future generations.
As part of the ongoing month-long awareness campaign, today’s chart-making competition aimed to engage youth in spreading vital information. In addition, awareness seminars and motivational programs for children undergoing treatment for Thalassemia will be conducted throughout the campaign.
Nodal Officers Dr. Harpreet, Dr. Isha Narula, and Dr. Shaeena shared that in Thalassemia, the blood production process in newborns is severely reduced, requiring blood transfusions every 10 to 15 days. The only curative treatment is bone marrow transplantation, which is extremely costly and dependent on finding a suitable donor—an option that is rare.
The winners of the competition included Anmolpreet Kaur (1st), Palak Bhatti (2nd), Komalpreet Kaur (3rd), and Rajbir Kaur (4th). Special support for conducting the event was provided by Clinical Instructor Sukhveer Kaur of the Nursing College.
