Chandigarh, June 26, 2021:
On Saturday, thousands of farmers across the Punjab blocked roads of Chandigarh while marching towards Punjab’s Governor House (Raj Bhavan) to mark completion of seven months of Kisan Morcha at Delhi borders.
At around 11 am, farmers in huge numbers, from different districts of the state, assembled in front of the Amb Sahib Gurdwara in Phase 8, Mohali on the call of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). The programme of the SKM was to march towards Raj Bhavan in Sector 6 here to handover their memorandum, written to the President of India. Following the call of farmers’ leaders, the protesters, including children, youths and elderly people, came on their tractors, vehicles and special buses to Mohali.
At around 1 pm, the farmers started moving towards Chandigarh via YPS Chowk of Mohali. A large number of cops were already deployed at the UT border to restrict the marching farmers. However, with the help of tractors and huge manpower, the farmers took around 5 minutes to breach all the barricades. Even the water cannons of the police failed to weaken the spirit of agitating farmers.
After entering inside the city from traffic lights of Sector 51/52, the farmers approached Raj Bhavan. However around 3 pm, the farmers had to stop at traffic lights of Sector 17-18 on the Madhya Marg, where the UT police had sealed the road by parking CTU buses. The farmers kept sitting at the Madhya Marg, around 2 km from the official residence of Punjab Governor VP Singh Badnore. After that, an official from the Governor's House met the farmers’ leaders and took their memorandum. It was only after that the farmers ended their march and made their way back to the Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali.
Farmers’ March put Chandigarh cops on toes:
In view of farmers' protest, a large number of police officials were deployed at the city borders as well as on the roads. Due to barricading of roads, the cops had to divert the traffic. The police had also sealed the area surrounding the Raj Bhavan to stop the farmers. However, no untoward incident was reported during the farmers’ march.
Tough time for commuters:
As the major city roads were occupied by the convoy of farmers, the commuters faced many troubles. Traffic congestion was also witnessed at many places.
Langar and Chhabeel welcome farmers during their march:
At many places in the city, the farmers were served with fruits and water bottles by their supporters. At YPS Chowk of Mohali, Davinder Bajwa and AAP leader Narinder Shergill, along with their teams, served langar and Chhabeel to the farmers.
