About the Book
Once asked to give a definite answer to the question whether he believed in God, Einstein is said to have replied, “Yes, (I do, but) I believe in Spinoza’s God, who reveals himself in the lawful harmony of all that exists.”
Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher who popularized the concept of Monism in Europe which proposed the unity of the Creator with the Creation. In far away India, the teacher or ‘Guru’ Nanak also proposed a similar idea in his poetry except that Guru Nanak’s writings predated Spinoza by almost two centuries. It is fascinating that these two intellectuals, though separated by time, space and civilizational worldview, came up with remarkably similar conclusions about the unity of the Mankind, the Universe—and God.
Japji is by far the most well known and recited of Guru Nanak’s works and yet ironically due to its exalted status as a sacred text, it remains under-appreciated as a literary and philosophical gem. A condensed summary of the Guru’s philosophy, the Japji not only describes the laws of a ‘God who reveals himself in a harmony of all that exists’ but also a way to fulfillment, living within those laws.
This book is effort to correct that anomaly. It is thus an introduction to Guru Nanak the philosopher and the poet, who is a delight to read, as much for the power of his thought as for the beauty of his verse.
