Amid lockdown, Dr.Rajiv utilizes quality time for rooftop organic gardening
Ferozepur, April 16, 2020: Dr Rajiv Arora, Head of Chemical Engineering Department of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Engineering College, Ferozepur, has started using the lockdown period available, due to pandemic coronavirus threat, for growing organic vegetables on the roof of his residence.
Dr.RajivArora resident of Preet Nagar has planted vegetables of ladyfinger, lemon capsicum, tomato, mint, ghiya, bitter gourd, petha, tienda, cucumber and brinjal etc. on the terrace.
Besides, he has also planted herbal plants of insulin in his garden. He is of the view that the consumption of leaves of the insulin herb is believed to lower blood sugar levels.
Speaking to Babushahi, Dr.Rajiv Arora said, it’s not expensive to do kitchen gardening on the roof of the house and only your passion, will and interest is required to ahead with such projects, to make the best use of the time and extension in lockdown time is as per expert’s advice on the corona.
Rajiv has put the seeds of vegetables in cartons, baskets, cement bags and large pots but bitter gourd, cucumber vine is a little weak as it needs more attention by using the sticks to support them and watering purposes. This way, the plants will not go dry and remain wet, to maintain the moisture throughout the day.
Divulging with the more details about its benefits, Dr.Rajiv said, these days organic vegetables are not available in the market. Growing vegetables at home save money and provide pure vegetables. At the same time, the watering and putting fertilizer has to be a regular and on-time feature, to get better results.
He said, I have used only compost prepared from leaves and kitchen waste for the plants. No chemical fertilizers and insecticidal drugs were used. Therefore, vegetables are completely safe from a health point of view.
Expressing his pleasures overspending the quality time in my terrace field, during the lockdown period besides taking online classes of Chemical Engineering students, Dr. Rajiv told many researchers have proved that gardening improves our immune system as well and he did an experiment by growing vegetables on the roof and it is successful.
Dr.Rajiv Arora is also encouraging others to adopt rooftop organic gardening. His wife Shivani, too an educationist working as Principal in Government School, kids – Pranav and Pareenita, his younger brother Sanjeev also help him in this task.
He also used large quantities of roses available in his colony to make pure rose water which is very beneficial as eye drops and distributed to the residents.
His recent research is on the availability of food nutrients in Rice Branch and working on it, which has more proteins than any other product available in the market.
Dr.Rajiv also appealed to the people to remain at home during the lockdown period and best use of the time and this will also help in the fight against corona.
