Mohali, February 8, 2021:
“I was able to develop the areas of the city as well as the village during my last tenure. I am all set to achieve victory for the second consecutive time now,” said Kamaljeet Kaur, a resident of Sohana and a candidate of Azad Group led by former mayor Kulwant Singh.
Kamaljeet Kaur got the victory in previous Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) elections as a candidate of Shiromani Akali Dal. Switched from SAD to Azad Group, she is contesting the MC elections from ward number 40, which is the largest ward of MC area as per votes. The ward has areas of five Sectors (Sectors 70, 71, 76, 77, and 78) and Sohana village. As per the new delimitation, this ward has 4,243 votes against approximately 3,300 votes in 2015.
Discussing the election agendas with Babushahi Times, Kamaljeet said, “I have my development work report for seeking votes this time. Around 90 percent of development work was done during my last tenure including installation of paver blocks and street lights, a makeover of dispensaries, cleaning, and repair of the nullah, and beautification of parks. The Mohali MC has just four villages out of which one village falls under my ward. I was able to maintain the development works in the village as well as the city area. We had spent Rs 2 crore for improving the infrastructure of Sohana village only. I was also able to pass two times the average number of resolutions passed by any councilor in the house. ” She also said that with the efforts of a few councilors including herself, the long pending demand of city residents of water tariff parity in GMADA sectors has been resolved now. Now, MC has took the control of GMADA (Greater Mohali Area Development Authority) from the sectors, where water tariff was more than two times of other Sectors.
Kamaljeet said, “My fight is with all major four candidates as I don’t underestimate anyone. My seat is not a reserved seat so I see this fight as quite interesting as well. Hopefully, our hard work will pay us this time too and we have our own agendas for seeking votes rather than defaming opposition. If I get a chance again, equal development will take place in city and village area.”
Alleging ruling party Congress, she said that the ruling party has disturbed the whole delimitation this time as per their greed of votes. She added, “Firstly, this ward is the largest and that too with a big difference. Secondly, the delimitation was done in so improper fashion that even the votes of a family have now broken between two wards. In our wards, there are few families, whose two members will cast their votes from ward number 40, whereas two from ward number 33, which is a result of improper vote lists. Also, many new and supplementary votes of our ward are not registered this time. The ruling party has duped all the candidates and we had also approached the SDM (sub-divisional magistrate) for filing the complaint in this regard but to no avail. But still, we will fight the polls and we are hoping to win the hearts of residents again.”
Born in Rani Majra village near Mullanpur Garibdas in Mohali, Kamlajeet said that she had no political background and she was a social worker. She has done her schooling from higher secondary school of her village. She worked at Sohana eye hospital along with her husband, Harsangat Singh. At present, she is working as a lab technician in a charitable lab at Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan.
